Bacteria Getting into Shape: Genetic Determinants of E. coli Morphology

Perturbation of cellular processes is a prevailing approach to understanding biology. To better understand the complicated biology that defines bacterial shape, a sensitive, high-content platform was developed to detect multiple morphological defect phenotypes using microscopy. We examined morphological phenotypes across the Escherichia coli K-12 deletion (Keio) collection at the mid-exponentia...

Recent advances in understanding how rod-like bacteria stably

Cell shape and cell volume are important for many bacterial functions. In recent years, we have seen a range of experimental and theoretical work that led to a better understanding of the determinants of cell shape and size. The roles of different molecular machineries for cell-wall expansion have been detailed and partially redefined, mechanical forces have been shown to influence cell shape, ...

Correlation Functions: Getting into Shape

The ability to measure characteristics of source shapes using nonidentical particle correlations is discussed. Both strong-interaction induced and Coulomb induced correlations are shown to provide sensitivity to source shapes. By decomposing correlation functions with spherical or Cartesian harmonics, details of the shapes can be especially well isolated.

Getting the embryo into shape

Membrane backtracking T he inner membrane of a chloroplast bristles with enzymes and other proteins that are synthesized in the cytoplasm, but how they get into position is uncertain. On page 249, Li and Schnell report that at least some proteins pass through the inner membrane and reenter it from the back side, rather than stopping on the way through. Chloroplasts are swaddled by inner and out...
